WHAT IS THE SECTION 179 DEDUCTION?
Section 179 of the Internal Revenue Code allows eligible businesses to deduct the cost of certain qualifying assets, including vehicles used primarily for business purposes, in the year they are placed in service.
For 2026, the maximum Section 179 deduction for qualifying heavy SUVs is $32,000, subject to business-use requirements and other IRS limitations.
Certain Range Rover, Defender, and Discovery vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) exceeding 6,000 pounds may qualify for these deductions.
WHAT IS 100% BONUS DEPRECIATION?
Under Section 168(k) of the Internal Revenue Code, eligible businesses may qualify for 100% bonus depreciation on certain qualifying property acquired after January 19, 2025.
Unlike the Section 179 heavy SUV limitation, bonus depreciation is not subject to the same $32,000 per-vehicle cap.
When applicable, bonus depreciation may allow a business to deduct the remaining qualifying depreciable basis of a vehicle after any Section 179 deduction.
This means qualifying businesses may be able to deduct up to the full eligible business-use portion of a vehicle's cost during the first year.
Both new and certain eligible pre-owned vehicles may qualify, subject to IRS rules.
WHICH VEHICLES MAY QUALIFY?
Several Range Rover, Defender, and Discovery models have configurations with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating exceeding 6,000 pounds and may qualify for Section 179 and bonus depreciation.

- Range Rover Sport
- Defender 90
- Defender 110

IMPORTANT TAX INFORMATION: The 2026 Section 179 deduction limit for qualifying heavy SUVs is $32,000, subject to applicable IRS limitations. The overall Section 179 deduction limit for tax years beginning in 2026 is $2,560,000, with a phase-out beginning at $4,090,000 in qualifying property placed in service.
Under Section 168(k), 100% bonus depreciation may be available for qualifying property acquired after January 19, 2025, and placed in service during the applicable tax year. Eligibility depends on acquisition dates, vehicle classification, business-use percentage, and other applicable requirements. Property acquired under a binding contract entered into before January 20, 2025, may be subject to different depreciation rules.
Vehicles generally must be used more than 50% for qualified business purposes to qualify for Section 179 and accelerated depreciation benefits. Deductions may be reduced based on actual business use. Changes in business use may result in depreciation recapture. Section 179 deductions are also subject to taxable business income limitations.
Not all vehicles or configurations qualify. Vehicle eligibility depends on the manufacturer's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), vehicle classification, and applicable IRS requirements. GVWR is the manufacturer's maximum rated loaded vehicle weight, not the vehicle's curb weight. Additional depreciation limitations may apply to certain vehicles.
Tax deductions are not equivalent to dollar-for-dollar tax savings. Actual tax benefits depend on the taxpayer's individual circumstances, applicable tax rates, and eligibility. State tax treatment may differ from federal tax treatment, including in New York State.
